Galata is a musical project that merges the Middle East with the Trallallero tradition, an ideal bridge that links today’s city with the old Genoese quarter on the Golden Horn in Constantinople, in the days when “the Superb One” had important relationships with the entire Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

It’s an imaginary journey around the taverns, the smoking dens, the Cafés aman, the meeting places, through the Makams (Middle Eastern modal scales) and the melodies of the magic circle of Trallalero. The rhythms and the music recall Rebetiko and he lyrics in Genoese give voice to another Genoa away from Genoa, to the sense of distance from one’s roots.

Influenced by the Turkish, Greek, Persian, Armenian, Kurdish, Arab, Balkan and Rumi (European) multiculturality characterizing Ottoman culture, Orchestra Bailam translates into music Genoa’s masculine character, with the Compagnia di Canto Trallalero, through the voices of Matteo Merli, Paolo Sobrero and Gael Princivalle.

Following its Middle Eastern vision, ORCHESTRA BAILAM has arrived to the roots of the Genoese folk tradition together with COMPAGNIA DI CANTO TRALLALERO, creating a repertoire that establishes a new land of poetry

Founded in 2012, Compagnia di Canto Trallalero, the voice of this project, is open to Middle Eastern contaminations, still preserving its traditional roots. Compagnia di Canto Trallalero is formed by selected members of different traditional “Squadre” (singing groups), as ‘La Squadra’ (ex Centro Storico) and ‘Canterini Val Bisagno’.
